AVENUE Q

This production will utilize 12 actors – 8 core actors and 4 Swings. We are looking for performers with strong acting ability along with strong singing voices (including ability to harmonize) and impeccable comedy chops. Puppeting skills and experience helpful but not required.  

Unless otherwise notated in the character breakdown, all roles are open to actors of all ethnicities/races, gender identities, and abilities. All are welcome and encouraged to audition. 

All roles are paid a $500 rehearsal stipend and a per show rate of $70.  Swings are paid a $500 rehearsal stipend and $100 per week on-call stipend for the run, plus a $70 per-show rate for any shows they cover.

No AEA/Equity contracts are available for this production.

Requirements

  • 32-ish measures of a song in the style of the show.
    • Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided.
  • Short comedic monologue in the style of the show. Or tell us a funny story.
  • You are welcome to perform your song and/or monologue with a puppet, but it is not required nor provided.
  • Hard copy of headshot and resume (please also upload a digital copy prior to the day of auditions at the link below)

Character Breakdown

NOTE: The genders listed with characters are as they identify in the script or how they are traditionally cast. However, just as in real life, genders may be/can be/will be/queen bee open to interpretation.

All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities and racial backgrounds unless otherwise indicated in the script.

Roles

Actor Track 1 (F)

Characters: Kate Monster (Puppet) and Lucy T Slut (Puppet)

Age: 25+

Vocal Range: Soprano/Alto Belt (F3 – F5)

Race/Ethnicity: Any

Kate is a lovelorn kindergarten assistant who dreams of opening her own school for monsters. Lucy is her antithesis – she has been very well “loved” and moonlights as a  night club singer/vixen.

Actor Track 2 (M)

Characters: Princeton (Puppet) and Rod (Puppet)

Age: 22+

Vocal Range: Bari-tenor (A2 – G4)

Race/Ethnicity: Any

Princeton is a fresh-faced college graduate trying to figure out what to do with his life. Rod is basically a Bert-parody investment banker with a fabulous secret.

Actor Track 3 (M)

Characters: Brian (Human)

Age: 35+

Vocal Range: Baritone (B2-F#4)

Race/Ethnicity: Any

Brian is an out-of-work wannabe comedian and is engaged to Christmas Eve.

Actor Track 4 (F)

Characters: Christmas Eve (Human)

Age: 30+

Vocal Range: Mezzo (B3-F#5)

Race/Ethnicity: Japanese/East Asian/Asian A therapist new to Avenue Q and engaged to Brian.

NOTE: While there are a couple of specific places the script emphasizes her Japanese accent, she IS NOT an Asian caricature. She is strong, direct, and fiercely intelligent. 

Actor Track 5 (M)

Characters: Nicky (Puppet) and Bad Idea Bear (Puppet). Actor also helps puppet Mrs. Thistletwat

Age: 25+

Vocal Range: Baritone (B2-B4)

Race/Ethnicity: Any

Nicky, an Ernie-parody and general slacker, is Rod’s roommate and object of desire. The Bad Idea Bears are cute and cuddly looking but give devilish advice.

Actor Track 6 (M)

Characters: Trekkie Monster (Puppet) and Bad Idea Bear (Puppet)

Age: Any

Vocal Range: Baritone (Bb2 – Eb4)

Race/Ethnicity: Any

Trekkie is a cookie-monster parody who is addicted to…..corn….rather than cookies. The Bad Idea Bears are cute and cuddly looking but give devilish advice.

Actor Track 7 (F)

Characters: Gary Coleman (Human)

Age: Any

Vocal Range: High Belt (D3 – Bb5)

Race/Ethnicity: Black/African-American/from the Diaspora Yes, that Gary Coleman. Washed up child star who is now the buildings super.

NOTE: Role is traditionally played by a female but will consider male or non-binary actors who can sing the part as written.

Actor Track 8 (M)

Characters: Mrs. Thistletwat (Puppet) and Bad Idea Bear (Puppet)

Age: Any

Vocal Range: Alto/Mezzo (Bb3 – C5)

Race/Ethnicity: Any

Mrs. T is a crabby old b….witch and Kate Monster’s boss. The Bad Idea Bears are cute and cuddly looking but give devilish advice.

Swing Tracks

“Off-Stage” Swings will be contracted to learn and cover multiple tracks.

Due to the nature of the material, please ensure you have read the script and are comfortable with all the material BEFORE auditioning. This script discusses issues surrounding triggering topics including racism, homophobia, sexuality, religion, and depression.
