LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU…

NAME: Kay Juricek

HOMETOWN: Crete Nebraska, raised on our family farm.

EDUCATION: B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, 1980. M.S. in Library and Information Science, Columbia University, New York, N.Y. 1984.

DAY JOB: I paint full-time.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE…

COLOR: All of them!

BOOK: Carl Hiaasen is always good, Lawrence Shames as well. Smart, funny and environmentally concerned. Too many others to list.

BAND: Quite a few, but at the moment its the Infamous Stringdusters.

THIS OR THAT…

DOGS OR CATS? Cats

HEELS OR FLATS? Flats

COKE OR PEPSI? Neither

SPRING OR FALL? Spring

SUNRISE OR SUNSET? Both

BEACH OR POOL? Yes

ANSWER ME THIS…

WHAT IS ART? WHAT MAKES AN ARTIST? To be a artist you have to have an inexhaustible desire to improve yourself, to paint better, to draw better, in spite of tremendous odds and certain rejection by juries, galleries and publishers. You have to have unshakable tenacity to keep working in the face of numerous roadblocks and repeated rejection. If you can do these things, then you have a very good chance at succeeding as an artist.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU CONSIDERED YOURSELF AN ARTIST? Always.

DO YOU HAVE FORMAL TRAINING? EDUCATION? Yes, an Bachelor of Fine Arts  degree from the University of Nebraska,  Lincoln, in painting and printmaking, and have taken classes and workshops from Denver artists Bruce Gomez and Kevin Weckbach.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEDIUM? Pastel and oil paint.

WHO/WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION? Artists I admire are Russell Chatham’s prints, Maynard Dixon’s landscapes, Rockwell Kent’s oil landscapes, Richard Diebenkorn’s New Mexico and California series, among others.

FAVORITE PERIOD? PIECE? Lately, Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series, Karl Rungius’ animal paintings, early 20th century California Impressionism.

IN ART HISTORY, WHO HASN’T RECEIVED ENOUGH CREDIT? Women artists. We don’t have too much historical information on past artists, the situation now is getting better.

WHO HAS TOO MUCH ATTENTION? Jeff Koons, Picasso, pop artists and minimalism.

ANY ADVICE FOR THE STRUGGLING ARTISTS OF THE WORLD? Work hard at it. Just because you get rejected doesn’t mean you stop. You have to develop a tough skin, because everyone gets rejection. What matters is that you don’t let rejection stop you from your pursuit to become a better artist. You have to have an optimistic, relentless drive that will not allow you to be deterred from your passion. Also, technology is your friend. Use it to start a website, share photos of your work, try to keep up with it.
